PUMAS site review

November 1, 2008 bennymath

The PUMAS site, http://pumas.jpl.nasa.gov/, is an awesome collection of math and science activities.  I will be referring to it often to find activities that will make math relevant for my students.  I especially liked the Coastal threat activity relating measurement conversions to a real life situation.  I plan to use this activity in collaboration with the 8th grade science teacher in an effort to create a cross-curricular lesson.  I especially think the students will enjoy the hands-on activity that demonstrates the extent of an oil spill.  My algebra students usually have a difficult time understanding how to convert units and estimating area or volume.  Using this activity will allow me to show them how to use conversion of measurement to approximate the volume of the spill as well as the extent of the area that will be affected.
